Review: Mbeze Koko Haze & Ife Samples

You've probably noticed a lack of perfume on this blog. I don't like a lot perfume and there's no commentary about scents or anything like that... It's because it gives me headaches and sometimes I don't react all that well to them. For a while, I switched to hypoallergic types of perfumes but the headaches remain. So I made the switch to perfume oils. BPAL has notoriously been one of my favourite brands for oils. I was super excited when Maria gave me some samples from Mbeze to try out.

Some quick notes about the Mbeze samples. You can't really take of the tag or else you won't know which one you have. They really ought to stick a small sticker with the name of the perfume on the vial itself rather than appending a tag to it which can easily get lost. Also, the vial is very classic like in the sense that it doesn't have a dabber on the stopper (that elongated piece attached to the stopper so that you don't have to apply it with your fingers). None of these are deal breakers, they are just things that would be nice to have.

Onto the scents! Coconut is one of my favourite scents (of all time. Well, aside from vanilla) so I was happy when she gave me the Koko Haze. Koko Haze is a mixture of coconut, hazelnut, with hints of mango tea and sweet orange essential oil. When I first applied it, it has a grassy scent -- it seems a bit off (not bad, just not as per the description) but as with all oils, you need to give it time to really work it's way in. Over the day, the scent works it's way in and becomes a warm coconut with toasty hazelnuts. It comes off as being a bit light but eventually fades by the end of the day.

Ife, well, when I first put it on I did enjoy the scent but I couldn't figure it out. I was quite perplexed since it was a light scent, a bit tropical it seemed, but more citrus. A few hours later, the scent worked it's way in to give off a light hint of strawberry. It turns out that it's a mix of strawberry with African musk and sandalwood.

The scent of Ife tends to wear out quickly and leaves behind hints of citrus. Or some kind of airy scent -- it's kind of hard to place but overall it doesn't quite match it's description.

I'm definitely a fan of the Koko Haze since I'm biased toward the scent of coconuts even though it fades. The Ife I'm on the fence about since it starts off on an interesting tone but wears down quickly. Each day I tried it, I nearly forgot that I was wearing it by the end of the day.

These products were part of the November Kara's Way box and was given to me complimentary for my evaluation.

Product: Mbeze Koko Haze & Ife Samples
Price: $2.50 each.
Would Recommend? Maybe.
Takeaway: The scents don't quite last which is unusual for an oil. Nonetheless the scents are nice -- I love the Koko Haze but Ife is a bit puzzling since it doesn't match it's description. Ife tends to wear out much faster than the Koko Haze which is why I'm on the fence. The latter was a stronger performer than the former so I think it's a matter of whether you want to take the risk on a scent or not.

Review: Aged BPAL Imps

A little while ago, I posted reviews for some of the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab imps that I had ordered earlier this year. In that post I had mentioned that it was someone from LiveJournal who got me hooked on them by sending me a few imps for Christmas. Well, some time after that post I visited my parents who found my old stash of imps -- and here I thought I had just lost them when I was moving. So the really awesome thing is that there was still a bit of perfume in some of the imps but the down side is that I got these imps back in 2006 which means they are very aged -- which would be fine except that a lot of these aren't in production any more. So if I get any of the information incorrect, I apologize in advance.

How I store my Imp's Ears. More about
this below.
Gennivre, L’Artiste du Diable
Description: Hyson tea leaf, pale mint, sugar cane, orange blossom, lemongrass, and honey.
Line: Carnaval Diabolique, Act II: Fiat Nox (BPAL.ORG)
Reaction: I vaguely remember drooling over this line but I don't remember this scent. I put it on and it smells like honey, which I love. It an amazing light scent which you can make out the orange blossom and in a far distance get the notes of the tea leaves.
Currently Unavailable.

Belladonna
Description: The devil’s herb, which he cultivates with skill and pleasure. According to lore, the spirit of this plant may take the form of a breathtaking, achingly beautiful woman, deadly to behold. This scent is a tribute to such a dark and magnificent plant: a rich green and floral blend, earthy and haunting.
Line: Rappaccini's Garden
Reaction: Oh my goodness, this was like Bengay out of the bottle. Very, very strong scent of menthol and it took a little while for the true scent to come in. When that strong methol died down, there was a hint of something else... something erring on the side of floral, but not quite. The interesting thing though is that time apparently has changed this imp very much especially since all the reviews on BPAL mention the same thing. Super strong florals though which caused a headache.
Still in production.

Erato
Description: She is the Muse of mimicry, and inspires both erotic and romantic poetry. She is crowned in roses, holding a lyre. Her scent inspires creative expressions of love and lust: a crush of roses with sweet pea, myrrh, ylang ylang, orris and stephanotis.
Line: The Muses: Erotic and Romantic Poetry (BPAL.ORG)
Reaction: It smells like incense -- not in a bad way but has this musky like feel to it (but it's not musk). It smells antiquated with that rose coming through strong and just a slight hint of ylang ylang. Very strong florals come in so a headache tends to come in with it. Luckily it doesn't completely dominate so I can definitely get on board with this one.
Discontinued.

Bayou
Description: A lazy, warm deep green scent with a thick aquatic undertone: Spanish moss, evergreen and cypress with watery blue-green notes and an eddy of hothouse flowers and swamp blooms.
Line: Wanderlust
Reaction: This definitely has a darker and almost deeper scent to it. The florals lightly come out but I can't quite distinguish the scents. It's a bit woodsy but over time the florals really dominate. Overall, I really like this one and I'm glad there is more of a woodsy undertone so that it doesn't make me need to wash it off.
Still in production.

Hades
Description: A dark, palpably sacred chthonic blend: black narcissus and cypress, stephanotis, opoponax, labdanum, onycha and ambergris.
Line: Excolo
Reaction: Out of the sealed bottle, this one had a very very light scent. You can just barely make out all the florals but once it is on your skin it slowly grows. The florals just completely dominate and you can make it out with complete ease. It's not overpowering as some of the other florals I've smelled but gracefully treads on that line as it remains solidly earthy.
Still in production.

Brides of Dracula
Description: Unquenchable desire, seething lust, malevolent sexuality, and voracious hunger lurking beneath a shimmering veil of unearthly beauty: gleaming skin musk, honey and white amber, plum blossom, osmanthus, sandalwood, calla lily, and a light, sensual blend of Eastern spices.
Line: The Order of the Dragon (BPAL.ORG)
Reaction: Powdery scent with a bit of musk and you can make out the hints of spices. This was one of my favourites when I first got these imps 6 years ago and this one continues to be my favourite of the batch. The spices and the honey comes in smoothly with just a hint of the florals. Overall I love this scent and I'm pretty sure I'll continue to hoard it.
Discontinued.

About the holder that I created, I used balsa wood and glued pieces together. The black fabric is actually ribbon that was cut and fitted to hold the imp's in. I used to hang the holder in a dark place (the imps should always be kept in a dark and cool area), and the black ribbon assisted in making sure they weren't exposed to light.

Prior to getting my Imp holder back (special thanks to my parents who found it), I had them stored in a drawer organizer (pictured on the left). Sorry for the blurry picture but it's dark in there.

BPAL sells the Imp's Ears for $4.00 each (they are 1/32oz). Some imps cannot be purchased if they are part of a set (and they make it clear what you can or cannot request) and you can get 6 imps for $22.00. These imps were a gift back in 2006 which is why many of them are no longer available.

Review: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

A long time ago, when I was but a poor college student I developed a yearning for BPAL Imps, except that I couldn't afford them. Now I know what you're thinking, Imp's Ears (which are sample size) are only $4 each -- but if you look at BPAL's extensive site, I'm pretty sure you can easily find 10 of them that you like. Anyhow, during that time, I was participating in a LiveJournal Christmas community called "Holiday Wishes" and someone sent me some imps. And that is how my love of BPAL was solidified.

Fast forward to last month, I finally decided to treat myself since I love oils over traditional perfumes and after combing through the site, I came up with 14 that I wanted -- but I paired down that list and opted for a bunch of from the Mad Tea Party line. (For future purposes, the ones I wanted are: Bordello, Salome, Black Pearl, Jack, Hanging Gardens, Gluttony, Elf, Drink Me, Eat Me, Queen Alice, Queen of Hearts, Red Queen, and Bread & Butter). From the ones that I got as a gift, Alice quickly became a favourite so in addition to the imps, I sprang for a 5 ml of the Alice.

Eat Me
Description: Three white cakes, vanilla, and red and black currants.
Reaction: Oh goodness, I ridiculously love this scent. The funny thing was that the morning that I selected it, I totally forgot what the description was and just grabbed one. The scent is delicious -- it has a bit of a deep earthy scent to it, but you can definitely make out the cake scent along with the vanilla. The mixture of currants might be what gives me that feeling of a earthy scent. This scent ridiculously smells so damn good. Sorry for the language, but yes, definitely a great choice. If you're a fan of sweet (deliciously savory) scents, I highly recommend this.
Update: I admit I was a bit heavy handed in the application of this oil but perhaps that's what helped it last all day. Seriously, I went to bed thinking of delicious cake.

Bread-and-Butter-fly
Description: Bread lightly buttered, with weak tea, cream, and a lump of white sugar.
Reaction: I hate to mimic yesterday but oh my goodness, this one smelled like cinnamon french toast. I was in a rush so I didn't apply as much (actually I put on a minuscule amount before running our of my apartment) but once that scent settled, all I could think about was french toast with a hint of maple syrup. I can definitely see the hints of bread and butter though I'm missing the hints of tea. >_< I kid, but I do love the scent of this one.

Drink Me
Description: Cherry-tart, custard, pine-apple, roast turkey, toffee, and hot buttered toast.
Reaction: If you have a nose for these perfume oils then you're bound to be better at it than I. When I first open each of them, while they have distinct signature scents, I'm usually not good at making them out. With the disclaimer out of the way, I opened this imp and it smelled like popcorn. Which is delicious in itself but made me weary about the occasion with which to wear it. Immediately after applying it, that popcorn scent went away and was replaced with a scent that I couldn't place for a while. Sure, it smelled delicious, but what was it? Vanilla with a hint of cherry. I'm definitely getting the hot buttered toast (and yes, it is very different than the Bread-and-Butter-fly's lightly buttered toast) with that cherry and custard. Overall, a beautiful scent, especially when you let it settle in. I adore it as well.

Queen Alice
Description: Carnation, posies, and white amber with a hint of inky treacle, sandy cider, and wooly wine.
Reaction: At first, I really couldn't place the scent (reoccurring theme here) but I figured that it smelled like a pastry but what? Well, for some reason I picked up cinnamon so it reminded me greatly of a cinnamon roll. As the initial scent wore down, there was the lovely garden scent. So in retrospect, looking back at the description, you can kind of pick up each hint of it. You start with this dessert like blend -- the treacle, cider, and wine which then subtly lends itself to the flowers. I will admit that I loved the initial scents and while the latter was good, they weren't quite up my alley. If you love the floral scent, then this would be a hit but alas, I am not. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy yet, just wasn't something I was prepared for.

The Red Queen
Description: Deep mahogany and rich, velvety woods lacquered with sweet, black-red cherries and currant.
Reaction: Upon first scent (while still in the bottle) it smelled really good, like a sugary fondant -- some type of light pastry like petit fours or the like. When I applied it though, that scent quickly faded into cedar. A few hours later, there is still a strong woodsy scent with hints of cedar but not super strong. If there were hints of cherries and currants, that definitely did not come through. Definitely not a favourite.

The Queen of Hearts
Description: Lily of the Valley, Calla Lily, stephanotis and a drop of cherry.
Reaction: Out of the bottle the scent was like a light pastry but I couldn't figure out what it was -- lighter than the fondant from The Red Queen, but still a hint of vanilla and then very faint cherry. The flowers came in strong once on my skin and after a few hours, though the scent became faint, the floral notes still remained. Perhaps this is just not the week for my wearing floral notes or I'm just not a fan in general, but I really didn't like it much. It reminds me too much of traditional perfumes (hey, nothing against them but they do tend to give me headaches) so this too wasn't quite up my alley either. (And yes, by this point I'm wondering why did I order all these floral oils, but then I realized that I got so overwhelmed by the sheer amount that I just picked names that I liked).

Note: By this point I had established that floral notes were giving me a headache for some reason. They don't normally cause this reaction for me, but I'm assuming I was extra sensitive this week for a myriad of reasons. I would still recommend Queen Alice, The Red Queen, and The Queen of Hearts if you like floral notes as they are great however during the time I was testing them, they just caused headaches which is a quirk of my own and not the perfume oils.

Dragon's Bone
Description: The dry, thin scent of a draconic ossuary. Dragon’s blood resin with white sandalwood, dusty orris and crisp blondewood.
Note: BPAL sent me a few extra imps, but since a friend wanted to try them out as well, I handed the majority of them to her. This one that I kept because I liked the name. >_< This one comes from the Ars Draconis line.
Reaction: Loved... and I do mean loved this one. Out of the bottle I wasn't sure what the scent was and in retrospect all I could think about was a desert. And maybe it's because I was recently playing WoW and all I could conjure up as an image was the Bronze Dragonshire, but the sandalwood came in strong and smelled so good. I was really very pleasantly surprised by how this smelled and I loved it -- it was right up my alley.

Alice
Description: Curiouser and curiouser. Milk and honey with rose, carnation and bergamot.
Note: You should already know that I love this one.
Reaction: Of course I love this one, my whole order revolved around my getting the 5ml of this. This one has very light floral notes, but mostly it smells of tea with honey and milk, which means while it's not like a cake it's still soothing and light. This scent definitely is me. Not too dense in flavour-like scent but not too heavy on the other notes, it's a perfect blend and I absolutely love it.

BPAL sells the 5ml for $17.50 and Imp's Ears can be purchased for $4.00 each (they are 1/32oz). Some imps cannot be purchased if they are part of a set (and they make it clear what you can or cannot request) and just a note that you can get 6 imps for $22.00 (which is what I did).

A Little Bit of L'Occitane

L'Occitane is like my personal black hole of abyss nowadays. Well, for my wallet. I go in there and it's the weird sensation of wanting everything. Of course, I can't really give into every single one of my desires in that store, but I can name them all. Today was a bit of a L'Occitane kind of day for me.

As I was getting ready, I treated myself to the very lavish Almond Milk Concentrate which I adore. The scent is amazing as it is light and refreshing but it is also so incredibly moisturizing. I have very dry skin and this was just superb as it moisturizes and keeps that up all day. Supposedly it helps to tone and firm, but I use this so sparingly that I can't really attest to that. I can say that if you have dry skin, it would be very good (though the price in another thing). The texture is a bit silky though not too watery -- it is definitely not the same as some of the other lotions that I've seen.

After putting on the lotion and fixing my makeup, I decided to put on perfume and sticking with the L'Occitane mood, I opted for the Plum Blossom. Now I know it's not fair to mention it as since it was a limited edition last year and while there is the Plum Blossom Intense Eau de Toilette Roll-on, it is only available in the UK, I had to mention it. The scent is just right up my alley with it's floral notes and that hint of plum sweetness. Which is actually kind of interesting considering that this type of scent isn't what I usually go for but I think that given it was light and simple, I actually ended up liking it. As a result, I'm kind of interested in this year's floral limited edition which is peony.

Price: $44
Would Recommend? Yes.
Takeaway: Great for dry skin and it is very moisturizing and is absorbed quickly. Feels great but the downfall is probably attributed to the price.
